Egg Drop Contest

By Brandon Lemons

At Saturday’s Neighborhood Party, there will be a new event: an Egg Drop Contest.  This event is designed to give people an opportunity to work together on a fun project, with a competitive element as well.  It’s an especially good opportunity for parents (or grandparents) and children to work together.  At the same time, anyone is welcome to participate!

I recognize some people don’t know what an Egg Drop Contest is.  Basically, participants build a device that is designed to protect a raw egg while the device, with the egg in it, is dropped.  The higher the device can be dropped from without damaging the egg, the better!  I’ve been a part of egg drop contests where eggs don’t break even from 30 feet in the air!

At the Neighborhood Party, participants will receive a kit with supplies for constructing their egg drop device; therefore, participants don’t need to bring anything with them (and no outside supplies are permitted).  The kits are all identical and will be distributed at 12:15pm; contents of the kit are viewable earlier at the party.  Participants will have up to 45 minutes to construct their device, and the competition of dropping the devices with eggs will begin at 1:00pm.

Participants are welcome to sign up at the party before 12:15 to guarantee their spot in the Egg Drop Contest.  This is open to individuals of any age, families, or other groupings of people.  Only one pre-registration per family is permitted, although families may be able to receive a second kit after 12:15, depending on demand (e.g., if there are fewer than 40 sign-ups, some families may be able to receive a second kit so the children don’t all need to work on the same device).  Those who are signed up must be present at 12:15 to receive an egg drop kit; otherwise, it may be given to someone else.

This will be a fun event that promotes teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving!  It’s also a great opportunity to invite others you know who would be interested in this type of activity.  Space is limited, so I recommend that anyone who is interested signs up early (between 11:00 and 12:15 at the party).
